3 Key Men’s Hairstyles Trends For Summer 2018
The imminent arrival of summer is a great time to switch up your wardrobe, and also, a perfect time for a new hairstyle, too. And in theory summer means sun and heat, and as such your new haircut should be both short and low maintenance. The buzz cut for instance. While we’ve taken the sun and heat into account, London Fashion Week Men’s plays a big part in our choice of Three of The Best hairstyles for men. Key designers are inspired and or inspire future trends, within the men’s style and hair categories. To not pay attention to them would be remiss. It’s not all about the weather you know.
Hairstyles for Men – Spring/ Summer 2018
Below you’ll find three hairstyles for men that Ape are predicting will be popular this summer. As ever, we try not to be influenced by changing fashion. Meaning the three hairstyles for men below are timeless options beyond this summer. Each haircut is listed with an Ape Approved hair styling product to assist with maintaining your chosen hairstyle. Naturally there are a variety of ways to each style, we’ve provided some examples below. And we advise showing your barber these. All are common cuts, your barber will know them. Your barber will also know which hairstyle best suits your face shape.
The Buzz Cut
The buzz cut is a catch-all title for a variety of short hairstyles usually crafted with electric clippers. Examples include the butch cut, crew cut, flattop and ivy league. The top of a buzz cut should be clipped to a uniform short length. While the back and sides are tapered short. The buzz cut helps make the face look more defined, are low-maintenance and ideal for those with thinning or receding hairlines. Most commonly seen atop the head of military recruits. Originally to prevent the spread of lice, but now for ease of maintenance, cooling, and uniformity.
“Traditionally, the buzz cut is a ‘close to the head’ style achieved entirely by using clippers. However, as time has moved on, so has the look of this cut. Now, there are many different variations that differ in fade and length. A popular choice for SS18 was the ‘Induction Cut’ – one of the shorter styles of this versatile trend seen at the What We Wear show. Its short length means that the cut requires very little maintenance, suits all hair textures, and is easy to maintain – great for those gentleman who lead busy lives.” -Artistic Director Dexter Johnson, What We Wear
To achieve the look, try label.men Scalp Tonic (£11.75) which will enhance the hair’s natural shine while maintaining a healthy scalp. There’s really little effort required here in terms of styling.
Natural Curls
I know what you’re thinking, I don’t have natural curls. Many of us don’t. But it doesn’t mean you can’t artificially create a few curls. While you may never be able to get a full-head of curly hair without a professional perm, getting some body, waviness, and curl into straight hair is possible with a little effort, the right strategy, and the right products.
After washing your hair, squeeze a small amount of curl-enhancing specific cream into your hands and run your fingers through your hair, from front to back. Let it set for a minute, then take a pencil and wrap sections of your hair into curls around the pencil. Count to 30. Keep working your hair into tiny curls until you like the look. If you are aren’t convinced on the pencil trick, you can adopt the same strategy but with your hands only. Do this by folding hair into different directions. Count to 30. If you’re pressed for time, try curling a smaller section of hair not your entire head – the fringe for instance.
“Natural curls were far less precise and manicured compared to previous seasons. An overarching ‘trend,’ which has very much been building over several seasons is around individuality, which in hair terms, means using the model’s natural texture to achieve the desired look. At Daniel W. Fletcher the team worked with the model’s natural curls and length as a base to create a diverse range of finished hairstyles for men.” -International Artistic Director Daniele De Angelis, Daniel w Fletcher
Try label.m Soufflé (£14.95) to create loose, natural waves. If you already have a natural curl, lightweight products which define the hair without weighing it down will work best.
The Shag Cut
The 1970s, pop-inspired shag hairstyle for men can be short, medium long, layered or tousled. Shags can be layered, feathery looking haircuts, which may be very short or reach all the way to the shoulders. You might even try it with a messy side parting.
After shampooing, work texturising fibre through your hair and blow-dry it. While you blow-dry (with your head in a normal position, or upside down), keep running your fingers through your hair to create the tousled look. Then use your fingers to shape your hair the way you like it and accentuate individual strands and hair ends. Finish with hairspray to set the style in place. To toughen up the style, wear with a full beard, it’ll looks great with the shag.
“Longer lengths for men has been making a comeback over the last few seasons. The Shag is a great representation of this current trend. Traditionally a style that sits between the collarbone and chest, it’s really face shape and texture which should determine which length is the most flattering. At E. Tautz we saw styles which enhanced the model’s natural texture, resulting in the overall look being loose and healthy. However, this style is versatile and can be worn short, medium, layered or tousled. It’s the perfect trend for those who are looking to grow their hair out whilst keeping it tamed and manageable.” -International Artistic Director Philipp Haug, E. Tautz
The key products in achieving the ‘Shag Cut’ are label.m Weightless Hairspray (£13.75) and label.m Miracle Fibre (£14.50).
